West Kalimantan Overview

West Kalimantan is a province in Indonesia which is located on the island of Kalimantan. The capital Pontianak is located right on the equator line. West Kalimantan region including an area that called The Province of Thousand River. Consistent with this surname geographical conditions that have hundreds of large and small rivers, among which can be plied. Some of the major rivers is still a main route for transportation hinterland, although the road infrastructure has been able to reach most of the district.

Although a small area of West Kalimantan is the sea, but the West Kalimantan has dozens of large and small islands (some are uninhabited) that spread throughout the Karimata Natuna Sea and is bordered by the Province of Riau.

The other borders of West Kalimantan roughly trace the mountain ranges surrounding the watershed of the Kapuas River, which drains most of the province. West Kalimantan is subdivided into two urban cities (kota) and ten rural regencies (kabupaten). The cities are Pontianak and Singkawang; the regencies are Sambas, Bengkayang, Pontianak, Ketapang, Landak, Sanggau, Sekadau, Sintang, Melawi , Kapuas Hulu, and the youngest regencies Kayong Utara and Kubu Raya.

This province has a diverse tourism potential such as natural, agro and culture tourism. Nature tourism among others, natural form of mountains, sea beaches, lakes, tropical forests with a diversity of flora and fauna, beautiful waterfalls in the Pande Kembayung and Riam Kanebak.

West Kalimantan has some of interesting tourist attraction such as : Equator Monument, Kadriyah Royal Palace, Pasir Panjang Beach, Bougainvillea Agro Tourism Park, Batu Belimbing Park, Kelam Hill National Park and Kopar Long House.

As the one of regions in Indonesia, West Kalimantan has lots of natural resources such as tropical rain forest with various kind of flora and fauna. Most part of such regions has been regulated as conservation forest area.

West Kalimantan region is inhabited by various tribes. The majority are the tribe Dayak, Malay and Chinese, besides there are also other tribes such as Bugis, Javanese, Madurese, Minangkabau, Sundanese, Batak.

The Temajo Islan is destinated to become an integrated zone that comprise an international harbor and a preservation forest area which can be utilized for ecotourism. Its coast is long and boast the potentials for diving, surfing and others. The zonal activities can be combined with those of the Kijing Beach, so that a respectable tourism zone can be established. The Pasir Panjang Beach has been partially developed by local investors and has some facilities such as hotels, sports facilities swimming pools etc. The Temajok Island (Paloh) borders Malaysia with beautiful view. Plans for its utilization have been designed.
